Default 3" Rootsaw vs 4x6 Expansion Blades...

Had this job yesterday. 3" cleanout opening, line runs 72' to city main. Line actually goes from 4" cast to 6" clay, back to 4" cast. Line was backing up every 11 months or so running the 3" rootsaw. I finally talked the home owner into the camera and expansion blades. Line was ran with each bit going back and forth when resistance was felt, no chasing with camera or touch ups to put on a show.

Here is the 6" clay to 4" cast transition.

Every single clay connection had roots but here are some of the worst areas. The first pic is after running the 3" rootsaw and the second pic is after running the expansion blades.

A bit smoother transaction than the one that I encountered a few years back, it had to be dug up.

The problem I have with the expansion cutter is getting it into a clean out.
Here most of the clean outs are at the bottom of the stack with a sharp turn below them.

Even the little General 4x6 won't do it let alone try the Eel.

Clean out yesterday was less than 3 inches. Tiny cutter, camera, yuck.

I hate pulling a toilet in an old house.
