Default Recieve a Call.." I Flushed My $20,000.00 Wedding Ring Down the Toilet" Come Quick!

Saturday 12-01-12 @ 9:30 PM...I had already done 3 calls that day and I had just sunk down in my recliner with a Miller Beer when the phone rings. You know that feeling....The last thing I wanted was a call because I was tired and it was getting late.. Lady on the phone says she had placed her wedding rings in tissue paper and placed that on the bathroon lav sink top...her husband came into the bathroom , saw the clump of tissue paper and flushed it down the toilet thinking it was garbage..They ask me to come out right away and see if I could find them in the sewer pipe because they had paid $20,000.00 for the set and by looking at the house I believe them...I go out and take off the clean out and check the lateral and find no rings...The had numerous small off sets in the lateral so I was hopeful that the rings had not have made it into the main sewer.. No sign of the rings though so far.... I scope the toilet and can not see it in the trap. ..I pull the toilet and scope that but nothing there...I go back down to the clean out on the soil pipe, take that off and stuff it full of a large towel blocking the the pipe... I had noticed that the closet flange- pipe had standing water in it about 1" deep so I poured a 5 gallon bucket of water very quickly into the 4" closet flange hoping to push anything that might be in there down the pipe or into view...Sure enough after pouring the water in and rescoping with my camera I see both rings as pretty and shiny as can be sitting in the pipe....I then get my closet auger and put it into the pipe, insert the camera and push the rings down about 12" with the head of the closet auger so the would drop into the stack and fall down into the towel.... With a little skill and alot of luck it worked and I had recovered the rings...I was so happy that I was able to find the rings and to get them back on her finger...it was now about 12:30 AM and as I drove home I was tired but happy that I had done something good for that young couple....untitled ring.jpgsecuredownload.jpg

You missed a great marketing opportunity. If you were one of the big franchises, you would have called all the news stations before heading out. Maybe scheduled a press conference? A helicopter would have been nice for aerial footage.

Great job! I had the same thing happen a few months ago. Lady lived in a co-op in Queens, NY and the branch line was shared by 4 units and 50 feet from the building trap. Good thing the line was dirty as hell. The sparkle from the ring made it a little easier. Ran a bunch of water down the line from the unit and with a little pushing with the camera got it into the main sewer, took a spare cable and pulled it down to the building trap. The sad part was that the lady left her husband there with me and she went off to work. I gave the ring to the husband and the next day she's calling and asking if I was coming back to try and continue to get it out. Told her i gave it to her husband and have pictures and she'd better call him to see what's up and call us back. Well 30 minutes later no phone call so i call her and ask what's up. She says "Oh my husband was just playing a joke on me". Not even a "Thank you for getting my ring". 2012-09-05-11-23-37.jpg2012-09-05-11-40-58.jpg2012-09-05-11-43-08.jpg

Now that is the best drain cleaning photo I have ever seen. Her smile is brighter than the rings. I bet you may receive a few referrals from her.

Good point. I guess you can just pull an Iwo Jima and reinact it after you know you've gotten it handled.

I had a similar job once and the customer a "Quite Good Looking Blonde Woman" insisted that her diamond engagement ring had gone in the toilet and it hadn't been flushed. I told her that we'd absolutely get it back as long as it hadn't been flushed...

It was a tough one and I finally found it peeking out of the siphon jet and after struggling a while I finally hooked it and got it out..
I had just cleaned it off with my disinfectant cleaner and I heard the woman coming down the hallway to check on the progress...

Now I'm a bit of a joker at times and well it just hit me that I should flush the toilet and go "Oh Damn!" just as she came in...
I laughed and gave her the ring and told her it was all cleaned off, she was quite happy to get it back...
Just then my phone rang and I could see it was my wife calling, I gave the customer the shhhh sign, with a wink that I was up to no good,
and answered the phone, putting the wife on speaker phone...

She asked me what I was doing and I replied,
"I'm just sitting here in a bathroom giving a pretty blonde woman a diamond ring."

    "You What?"

Well after a brief explaining we all had a pretty good chuckle and the customer told my wife how bad I was...
She told me that this story would definitely make the rounds and it had been a fun adventure...
